"Don't Cha Go 'Way Mad” — Lucy Ann Polk
There are many classic songs of which I never get bored and one of these is "Don't Cha Go 'Way Mad."
It was composed in 1950 by tenor saxophonists Illinois Jacquet and Jimmy Mundy. The latter is also know as a superb big band arranger. The lyrics are by Al Stillman, a New York Radio City Hall writer.
I've chosen a July 27, 1957 rendition by vocalist Lucie Ann Polk (1928-2011). This attractive singer was once the featured vocalist for Les Brown and Tommy Dorsey, amongst others.
In the early 50s she was voted "Best Girl-Singer with Band” by the Down Beat Reader´s Poll. She still remains the only singer who was rewarded this title for four consecutive years.
In this week's SUNDAY CLASSIC Lucky Lucy Ann is accompanied by a sextet under the direction of pianist Marty Paich. The tenor saxophone solo is by Bob Hardaway.
Siegfried Holzbauer compiled an excellent 53-page biography/discography about Lucy Ann Polk's career.
It can be read on-line at: http://advancedpoetx.com/MUSIK/LUCYANNPOLK.PDF
If you could have voted for a "Best Girl Singer with Band" poll during the 50s, which vocalist would you have selected?
Have a nice Sunday.
